Income and Tax Information |
If you are selected for verification, we are required to collect income information from all applicants and their spouse/parent(s) reported on the 2022-23 FAFSA and verify that information.
- If you (or parent/spouse) filed a 2020 tax return and were unable to successfully use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when submitting the 2022-23 FAFSA, you will need to provide an IRS Tax Return Transcript. If the return was amended, a copy of the signed 1040X or IRS Tax Account Transcript is required. We cannot accept copies of the 1040 tax returns or printouts from tax preparers. Those that filed a US Territory or foreign tax return must provide a signed copy of those tax documents.
- Those that did not file taxes must submit copies of all W2-s from employers or 1099´s from 2020 and a Verification of Non-Filing Letter from the IRS that is dated on or after October 1, 2020. Dependent applicants do not have to submit the non-filing letter for themselves, but each parent reported on the FAFSA does, separately.
- Non-filers that were outside the US in 2020 must provide documentation from the relevant tax authority dated on or after October 1, 2020 that indicates an income tax return was not filed with the relevant tax authority, or a signed statement certifying the amount the person earned and taxes paid (if any); and that the individual attempted to obtain confirmation of non-filing from the relevant tax authority and was unable to obtain the required documentation or there was a charge to do so.
- If you or your parent/spouse was a victim of IRS tax related identity theft or was granted an extension beyond the automatic 6 month extension for 2020, please contact the Financial Aid Office to determine what documentation you will need to provide.
